About Group 157
Amnesty International Group 157 has been serving AI in the Charlottesville area for 25 years.
We believe in human rights as a foundation for peace and justice and we regularly take actions demanding that governments live up to the standards set forth in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
We write letters on behalf of human rights victims, hold seminars on human rights topics and raise funds to support the preservation of human rights world wide.
Amnesty International is a worldwide grassroots organization working for:
- The release of prisoners of conscience; men, women and children imprisoned for their race, ethnicity, gender, language, religion, sexual orientation or beliefs, so long as they have neither used not advocated violence;
- An end to all torture and executions
- Protection for refugees who might be tortured, killed, or wrongfully imprisoned in their own countries
- Fair and prompt trials for all political prisoners
- Applies a single, internationally agreed upon human rights standard to all governments;
- Conducts internationally respected research on human rights issues;
- Has more than 1 million members in over 150 countries;
- Is funded solely by private donations from supporters; receives no money from any government;
- Received the 1977 Nobel peace Prize.
